EWRT 2 Essay Two on Dress Codes/Richard Thompson Ford
[You will write an essay and then upload your essay as a doc, pdf, or docx]
This essay is 3 to 4 pages typed. At minimum, it must be 3 FULL pages (that means the typing goes all the way down to the bottom of the third page). It is in MLA format: 12-point font; double-spaced; one-inch margins; heading in the upper left-hand corner; with an original essay title.
Please include at least four quote sandwiches” in this essay.
[Review the Canvas Module handout for “Quote Sandwiches” if you forgot what those are. You can also study the sample essay handout from the first week of class. Remember, embedded quotes have certain punctuation rules; and block quotes do as well, such as block quotes needing to be indented 10 spaces in. Remember to include the parenthetical reference for quotes–showing the last name of the author, and the page number where one finds the quote; example: (Ford 34).]
Now that you have read through a significant portion of Dress Codes, write an essay on the topic below. Please base the majority of your essay ONLY ON EXAMPLES FROM THE BOOK.
However, with your CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH of this essay, design your closing as a “personal reflection conclusion paragraph”: reflect on a personal interaction with a dress code, or, explain the dress code experience of someone you know.
Please note that outside research is not required for this discussion. The goal here is to spend time doing a deeper dive into one chapter from the book, so you walk away understanding the concepts of one chapter very well, being able to persuade a reader of the chapter’s strengths:
ESSAY TOPIC:
In your opinion, which chapter from Dress Codes best supports the argument that the enforcement of dress codes is an extremely complicated action. You can decide if dress codes are complicated in negative or positive ways, or even both.
On the one hand, concepts of proper attire (which often also includes grooming standards for hair, nails, other parts of the human body) are perceived by human beings in very different ways. Enforcements, and violations, of dress codes can then often end up connected to legal disputes, misunderstanding, and sometimes even danger. At the same time, the agreement on certain dress codes can also be a way of bringing like-minded personalities, or groups, together–signaling membership and human connection. Dress codes can also exist for safety or hygiene/sanitation reasons (avoiding injury; working near dangerous machinery; handling food or medical devices).
Here is a thesis statement you can use to write this essay:
If I could only pick one chapter to read from this text, it would have to be Chapter ________________. The most complicated (or two most complicated) events discussed in the chapter is/are __________________________ because the event/s asks readers to consider ___________________________
Here is a sampling of the many concepts author Richard Thompson Ford explores. Feel free to direct your essay topic to one of these complex ideas:
legal history and notable legal cases in Western culture–past and present
obeying a monarchy in earlier centuries or sumptuary laws
oppression or control of genders and gender expression via dress codes–past and present
damage to the human body (such as early iterations of the corset harming female body organs)
civil rights and human rights movements
political movements/ political affiliation or political signaling via clothing
military history and influence on clothing/fashion/expression/diplomacy/leaders of state
freedom of expression and freedom of speech
forms of sexism via dress codes
forms of homophobia and transphobia via dress codes
forms of racial or cultural discrimination via dress codes
workplace discrimination lawsuits or school dress code lawsuits
legal cases on gang-affiliation attire/school dress codes centered on avoidance of gang-affiliation attire
copyright law/trademark law (such as lawsuits around trademarks; patents; logos; through luxury goods)
oppression/or misunderstanding of minority religious groups in earlier time periods or throughout history
religious or faith-based mandates/customs/or expectations on clothing/dress codes (shifting throughout history)
changing economics and economic class shifts; socioeconomic changes expressed via dress/attire/hairstyles
enslaved populations in history being forbidden from wearing certain articles of clothing or clothing fabrications
human survival; joy and creative expression; or human connectivity via clothing
other concept you have in mind? (Please discuss with me)
As you study your chapter, notice how logos, pathos, and ethos are being used by Ford. Locate and cite key quotes and passages from the chapter to convince the audience why it is this chapter that stands out most in the book.
