Debate – Experience at monuments CANNOT be evaluated by archaeologists

One of the most important ideas that came out of the post-processual period was that the built environment can impact the experience we have when visiting a monument. For example, your experience at a great cathedral still in use will be different than if you visit the ruins of a cathedral that was abandoned centuries ago. This debate surrounds the validity of experience at prehistoric monuments. As important as experience will have been to prehistoric people visiting monuments, can we really evaluate the experience as modern archaeologists? Why, or why not? How? Is it necessarily important to archaeological research?
