Design your brochure as if your patient is passing it by in the doctor’s office. Make sure to include basic information as well as other pertinent data. Based on the condition chosen for week 5, students will individually create a nutritional brochure. “Imagine that a patient is walking into their doctor’s office and passing by nutritional brochures for their condition. If they stopped to pick up the brochure you created, what information would it have and why.” Since this project is towards the end of the semester, it will give students the ability to apply nutritional information already learned. Information in the brochure can include more foods to include in the diet, which foods to avoid and how the dietary restrictions can exacerbate or improve the condition. The student will also have to give a little explanation of the physiology of the nutritional restrictions in order to convince the reader of the validity of the brochure. Other information that can be included can be websites to look at, vitamins to include, cultural influences, label reading, age-appropriate advice, possible alterations due to organ function compromise, etc. Students can get creative with this project.
