1. Either observe or think back to a time you have been in a group of friends talking. How did the converstation topic hold or shift during your time together? Did anyone ask questions that deepened communication amongst your group or shift the direction of the conversation? Describe what you observed or remember with what you have read this week in mind. 2. Think of a group you might lead. Describe your group’s purpose and the topic of your group. Then describe three ways you could deepen the focus of the topic you have chosen when working with clients. 3. What are some of the skills a counselor can use to ‘”cut off” a member from talking? What are some times you might need to use this skill? What is your comfort level with using this skill? 4. What are some skills a counselor can use to “draw out” a member of the group. What are some of the reasons group members might not be engaging in the group experience? 5. How can the use of dyads assist in drawing out group members?
