Reflective Journals 1
1. New information/insights learned from your ah ha moment (from class activities, videos, etc.)
While studying module
21 material, I read that all our decisions and actions come from conscious and unconscious beliefs and values. This concept got me thinking. I wondered how people came up with decisions, especially life-defining decisions. For example, I wondered how people decide to give permission for their loved ones to be taken off life support. Thats a tough decision, and it takes courage and serious thinking to decide that. Learning that all our decisions and actions come from our conscious and unconscious beliefs and values helped clear my confusion. because people are rooted in different values.
2. My thoughts/feelings regarding this topic, self-examination.
l agrees with the concept of self-examination because it involves an in-depth look at ones beliefs and values. My ability to fully understand my role as a healthcare aide involves self-acceptance, self-awareness, and my ability to take criticism and be willing to make changes to better myself. When setting goals must consider my strengths, weaknesses, limits, and expectations. I learned to set more realistic goals to avoid failure or disappointment in the future. Cultural bias happens everywhere, in residences, workplaces, schools, buses, etc. Most people have assumptions about how
people of a particular culture behave. This topic helped me reflect on my life and past experiences.
3. How this information will assist you personally and professionally (in your role as a Health Care Aide)
This self-examination has helped me understand the importance of acceptance and tolerance toward my clients beliefs and values. I can only accept others when I have entirely accepted myself. I will respect and accept my clients beliefs and values irrespective of cultural differences. I will be more sensitive to my clients cultures and needs. For example, observation of religion, permitting room personalization using artistic decor and signage, etc. I will pay attention to both verbal and non-verbal cues. I will avoid culturally biased assumptions at all costs.
4. Is there anything relating to the outcomes that you are unclear about or have questions about? Explain
Something I need more clarity about is cultural competency. How can I be perfectly culturally competent irrespective of cultural differences and values? I know that cultural competency is key to working as a healthcare professional. Since I moved to Canada in 2019, I have done many things to improve my cultural competency, but I feel I have not done enough. I have been in class with people of diverse cultures and beliefs. Most of the time, I speak slowly, simplifying my sentences, using non-verbal communication, and repeating important information when necessary. I believe with better practice; I would be more culturally competent.
