Learning Goal: I’m working on a microbiology writing question and need the explanation and answer to help me learn.

Goal

  • You will be answering questions related to Coronaviruses (CoVs) and rapid testing technologies. I have provided two pieces of reputable peer-reviewed literature to help you answer these questions. For each question, you should use the provided literature articles to support your answers.
  • To successfully answer the questions, you will need to read and understand the literature choices provided, then use your own words to paraphrase what was stated in the articles, ie support your answer. Be sure to answer all parts of each question.
  • I encourage you to look up new vocabulary (examples: incubation period, serology, convalescent serum, monoclonal antibody, efficacy) using online medical dictionaries like
  • Lifted phrases from the articles will not receive credit. I want to hear your voice, not that of the authors of the literature.
  • If you are not sure how to paraphrase correctly, check out this handout on: HANDOUT LINKED BELOW

        2. How are SARS-CoV-2 spike proteins different than influenza spike proteins?
        3. How do the SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 viruses differ in how they gain access to a host cell? Support your answer.
        4. In your own words, describe three ways the viral protein Nsp1 makes a host cell stop translating its own RNA.
        5. What advantage does forming synctia give to SARS-CoV-2? Support your answer.
        6. Where do SARS-CoV-2 viruses obtain their envelopes as they exit the host cell?
        7. What is the result of host furin enzyme cutting SARS-CoV-2 spike proteins?
        8. In your own words discuss at least one pitfall of the RT PCR test.
        9. According to the data in Figure 1 of the second paper, which test, lateral flow test or PCR, gives positive results only within the infectious period? Support your answer.
        10. According to the data in Figure 1 of the second paper, if you just became infected with SARS-CoV-2, what result would a PCR test give? Support your answer.
        11. Which testing strategy (mass testing, SMART, test to protect, test to release, or test to enable) do you think is the best strategy? Support your answer.
        12. How long is the incubation period of SARS-CoV-2?
        13. If you have a negative result in the lateral flow test, could you still be infectious? Support your answer.
        14. Regarding the first article, what was the most surprising thing you learned?
        15. Regarding the second article, what was the most surprising thing you learned?

Must include a cover page with your name, date, and section number. Following the cover page, a numbered list of the answers is preferred. No need to restate the questions.
