Using the chosen movie case study, students will apply material from the course to describe each of the following:

1. Etiology/Conceptualization: Using the theories related to addiction (biological/genetic, psychological, familial, cultural/social, environmental, etc.) describe the etiology of this individual’s addiction and any co-occurring disorders the individual might be experiencing. (CMHC 5. C. 1.c, 1.d, 2.e, 2.j)

2. Assessment: Describe the screening and assessment methods you would use with this individual and your rationale for choosing these methods. (CMHC 5. C. 1.e)

3. Diagnosis: Describe your diagnostic impressions and rationale (e.g., criteria met from the DSM-5) for substance-related or addictive disorders. Considering that substance use disorders can mimic other disorders, describe one differential diagnosis that is not a substance-related or addictive disorder (i.e., mental health disorder). (CMHC 5. C. 2.d., 2.e)

4. Treatment: Describe your recommended treatment for this individual including appropriate levels-of-care (i.e., inpatient, intensive outpatient, outpatient) and any step-down levels. Include culturally-relevant theory-based techniques and interventions for prevention and treatment you would recommend for this individual, including a focus on preventing relapse. (CMHC 5. C. 1.b., 1.c, 2.b, 2.c, 2.j, 3.b)
