Objective: Writing about scientific principles and phenomena is an important skill for all biologists. These Essay Exams are designed to help you understand a major concept covered while also helping you develop your science writing skills.
Rules: Submit an essay about 3 double-spaced pages in length. Do not worry if you are a little under or over 3 pages. The page limit is for text; I am excluding figures, tables and references in this limit. Figures and a full reference list are required but do not count in the page limit. Work independently and do your best. I expect to hear your voice explaining these concepts using the knowledge you have and the research you have undertaken. You are not expected to find resources beyond what you already have in Canvas or in your textbook (although you can if you wish to). You must cite your sources as you have done in your lab reports. Use correct spelling and grammar and think carefully about the structure of your essay.

your essay. Provide a concise overview of the question at the start of your essay.
(2) Provide the necessary scientific details about this concept. (3) Use relevant information from your notes, the textbook, and the various resources provided in Modules of our course to support your ideas.
(4) Explain why this information is relevant to your
life or useful for you and give examples. Since you will be writing about science from a personal perspective, you may use personal pronouns (I, we, you, etc.).
Essay Topics: Pick one topic only.
1. What is splicing? What is alternative splicing? Explain how alternative splicing
might affect metabolism. Hint: see Gingras et al., 2014 (available in Modules).
