Learning Goal: I’m working on a nursing multi-part question and need the explanation and answer to help me learn.

  • Identify a clinical issue that you are interested in.
  • Type at least one full sentence what your clinical issue is about. The purpose of this assignment is for other students to see potential clinical questions and potential PICO components, This gives students an opportunity to find common interests for further assignments, and joining a group.
  • Identify the elements of the PICO you will identify from this question.
  • Identify one (1) scholarly article to provide evidence for your question.
  • Post in the discussion:
    • your clinical question
    • elements of the PICO
    • one (1) reference in APA 7th Ed. format. This must be a reference to a research article, not older than 5 years, and published in a peer-review journal.
    • Here is an example the instructor provided:
    • This is why we use the PICO format (P=population, I=intervention, C=comparison, O=outcome).
Let’s try our question: P=Adult, ICU intubated patients; I=Chest X-ray confirmation after initial placement only, C=daily Chest-X rays, O=aspiration pneumonia (sometimes we don’t have a “comparison”, or comparison is the standard practice). While the PICO will help me determine my search words, we also want to put it as a question statement, e.g., does daily chest-X rays compared to chest-Xray confirmation of the placement of a nasogastric tube once, increase the risk for aspiration pneumonia? Some authors use the PICO(T) format. The T refers to time. An example of a clinical question incorporating the T – does hypothermia protocol during cardio-pulmonary resuscitation decrease the mortality of cardiac arrest adult patients within 24 hours after the cardiac arrest?
