Actor The Houthi Movement
Based on students understanding of civil conflict and how terrorism and political violence ends, students are to write a 1000-word essay discussing the feasibility of the conflict ending by Cronins conceptualizations of decapitation, negotiations, success, failure, repression, or reorientation. Students are to consider and discuss two of the six options (decapitation, negotiations, success, failure, repression, and reorientation) by contextualizing these in the context of your chosen civil war as applied to the designated actor. For each of the two chosen options, students are to weigh up the feasibility of the conflict ending against this actor by these outcomes. This includes identifying the pros and cons of the chosen options and what this would mean for state authority and legitimacy, before arguing for and justifying the most likely outcome against the actor.
Students are strongly encouraged make their arguments clear in the introduction and conclusion, and to use examples to support their arguments. Students can use, but shouldnt over-rely on, subheadings. Students must use a consistent and correct referencing style (either Harvard or Chicago) and provide a bibliography with at least 12-15 sources. Word limits are exclusive of references. Please upload your assessment in a .doc or .docx file (no PDFs). Feedback will include a rubric with comments returned to students on Monday 7th November for on-time submissions. It is strongly recommended that students consult and engage with Audrey Kurth Cronins book, How Terrorism Ends: Understanding the Decline and Demise of Terrorist Campaigns, which can be accessed through the library.
Notes: This is in a critical analysis and argumentative style essay.
