What did Washington mean by “Cast down your bucket where you are”?

 

Washington expressed a distinctive vision of racial equality and progress in his  

famous statement, “In all things that are purely social we can be as separate as  

the fi ngers, yet one as the hand in all things essential to mutual progress.”  

What were the implications of his vision for blacks who sought equality and  

progress? What signifi cance did Washington attach to the words separate and  

mutual?
