The goal of this first writing assignment is spend a little more time time considering this distinction and some of the reasons why cognitive explanations might be necessary. First, I’d like you to provide a brief explanation of the difference between the behaviorist and cognitive views, identifying the central themes of each perspective. Draw from your notes and from the readings (including the Tolman article discussed below). Second, I have attached to this assignment a 1948 review by Tolman of results (primarily from his lab) that helped to lay out evidence that the behaviorist perspective was incomplete and a cognitive perspective was necessary to explain behavior. While Tolman discusses many lines of evidence for why a cognitive perspective might be important to understanding behavior/learning, what I would like for you to do is to identify and describe two of those lines of evidence. For each line of evidence, a) identify and explain the behavior/effect/phenomena associated with that line of evidence, b) discuss Tolman’s explanation of that behavior/effect/phenomena, and c) compare it with the behaviorist explanation that he is arguing against, including how they are different.
